Find the Thesis statement

In the comment box, students will paraphrase (in their own words) the main thesis or argument of Hongxi Su’s blog post, linked below.  One or two sentences will suffice–no more.  Students will have about 5 minutes.

  1. The thesis is that by looking at how The Dunciad’s description of Opera helps one understand what Pope’s critics were trying to say in their print of him.

    • Pope’s description of the Opera is what his critics are comparing him to. Pope mentions that Opera is a harlot so his critics use the same description when referring to Pope

  2. The thesis is that Pope’s The Dunciad is used to satirize and allude to the discriminatory actions towards Pope by those who do not like him with his and their use of a “Harlot” and Pope as a small man which he satirizes in The Dunciad.

  3. Comparison and analysis are coexistent throughout the blog until the last sentence.

Hongxi Su stated, “Through interpreting the provocative image by Alexander Pope’s bullies with the reading of The Dunciad, can we recognize the allusions used to bully Pope, and question the oppressive mentality of his bullies”.

With this we are able to conclude that given her analysis the pope was bullied but his bullies were also weak willed thus making him an easy target.

To me, the main thesis of Hongxi’s argument is that Alexander Pope’s Dunciad uses parallel imagery tying in Art and the theater to reconstruct and reformulate his bullies’ usage of provocative imagery to attack his character against their own characters.
I took this falling under the following excerpt from her blog post but expanding on her opening analysis:
“[the] suggestive image not only bullies Alexander Pope’s physical disability, it critiques The Dunciad as a sexual debauchery between Pope and his beloved satire, that is observed by Warwick. Through interpreting the provocative image by Alexander Pope’s bullies with the reading of The Dunciad, can we recognize the allusions used to bully Pope, and question the oppressive mentality of his bullies.”

  5. The thesis: The Opera degrades everybody involved in the ego behind it and that includes those who reject or critizice it – including Pope himself.

  6. The original argument that Hongxi has is that Pope is as good at his satirical work as he is as choosing women. Because of this, he needs to be saved from his bad habits, but the target of his satire is the one trying to save him, making the savior the butt of the joke.

  7. I believe the thesis is, “Tiny Pope is ravishing the object of his satire, whilst being saved by the target of his satire, and Warwick observes as the audience.” because it gives us a straight to the point description of what she thinks the image is trying to tell us.
