Reason and Difference

In Gulliver’s Travel by Jonathan Swift, Swift tells the story of a man named Gulliver and how he was captured and learns about colonialism. The topic of discussion for this blog post is whether humans should behave like the Houyhnhms in order to live a more harmonious life. It seems that it would be ideal for humans to behave similarly to how the Houyhnhms creatures behave. They are reasonable creatures that act and think logistically. Their whole existence is for reason. This certainly seems appealing at first, but I’m curious to find out what would happen if this reasoning that all of the Houyhnhms follow was questioned and how would they react.

It is important to understand people’s perspective and views. In a society where opinionated people tend to win arguments by shouting or stating their argument in a way that is dominating over the latter, Houyhnhms all follow one reason, one single thought or belief. This is definitely something we should try to achieve, as far as respecting other people’s opinions, but also know that it is normal and okay to have differences of opinions. The Houyhnhms are considered perfect in nature because they do not argue, they just follow one another. It would be interesting to have a world where we all believe the same ideals and adapt the same behaviors, but at the same time it is nearly impossible for that to occur and personally, I wouldn’t want to live in a world where we all believed the same beliefs and ideals. It wouldn’t allow creativity and healthy differences of opinions to flourish. It is okay to question some things, because it helps us grow as a society, to see from other people’s perspective. I do agree, however, that we should be respectful and kind to one another, even if we have differences of opinions and don’t agree with each other.

  1. The main idea is, “It would be interesting to have a world where we all believe the same ideals and adapt the same behaviors, but at the same time it is nearly impossible for that to occur and personally, I wouldn’t want to live in a world where we all believed the same beliefs and ideals.” You bring up a great argument. I would, for informative purposes, explain how the similar thoughts of the Houyhnhnms inhibit them if not affect how they treat other races.
